BIOGRAPHY

thisquietarmy is the experimental guitar-based project of Eric Quach from Montreal, Quebec, Canada - active since 2005. Revolving around improvised drone music, he takes his sonic experimentations further by adding textural and structural elements of post-punk, shoegaze, krautrock, post-rock, black metal and doom metal to them. The results can be described as dark, melodic, expansive and engaging dreamscapes. His live performances are mostly presented as a real-time score to hypnotic ethereal visuals, which he creates himself for each performance.

thisquietarmy has released 5 official albums: Resurgence released in 2011 on Denovali Records (Germany), Vessels released in 2011 on Aurora Borealis (UK), Aftermath released in 2010 on Basses Fréquences (France), Blackhaunter released in 2008 on Elevation (USA) & Unconquered released in 2008 on Foreshadow (Poland). Other releases (collaborative/split albums & EPs) have appeared on labels such as: Alien8 Recordings (Canada), Killer Pimp (USA), three:four (Switzerland), Lunasylum (Belgium), Orange Milk (USA), as well as his own imprint TQA Records (Canada).

thisquietarmy has also collaborated extensively with Aidan Baker (Nadja), Monarch!, Scott Cortez (Lovesliescrushing) and Yellow6, and has several side-projects (Destroyalldreamers, Mains de Givre, Parallel Lines and Ghidrah). He sometimes perform under the moniker hi my quiet tsar for his synth-drone/noise project.

With already such a large body of work released and over 200 performances all over Canada, USA & Europe, thisquietarmy is a forward contender as a pioneer of the experimental music scene emerging from Canada.

Eric Quach is a guitarist and sound engineer who performs under the name Thisquietarmy. He is also the guitarist and founding member of the Montreal-based instrumental rock band Destroyalldreamers. With two internationally acclaimed albums, “À Cœur Léger Sommeil Sanglant » in 2004 and « Wish I Was All Flames » in 2007 on Where Are My Records, a Montreal record label, as well as a 12” vinyl EP « Glare/Halo » in 2006 on Claire's Echo, an American record label, Destroyalldreamers has gained a notorious cult band status amongst their peers.

As Thisquietarmy, a one-man solo drone/ambient project, Quach composes visual guitar-based soundscapes and experimental music that goes beyond the typical song structure. By exploring his guitar as a tone generator, he furthers the boundaries of his instrument with the use of multiple effect processors & real-time loop-samplers, alternating the guitar signal’s shape and tone, blending textures over textures, merging a wide combination of sounds together and developing the melodies hidden in these walls of sound. Concrete musical ideas are often generated by the re-interpretation, the decomposition and the reconstruction of its own improvisations. Thisquietarmy performs live regularly throughout Canada and the USA, and has played with Ulrich Schnauss, Olafur Arnalds, Tim Hecker, Troum, Nadja & Caspian just to name a few.

Thisquietarmy has released two albums « Unconquered » and « Blackhaunter » in 2008, respectively on Poland’s Foreshadow Productions and USA’s Elevation Recordings. He has also released several EPs including: « Wintersleeper » (2005) and « Orange » (2006), both on his own imprint This Quiet Army Records, « Echotone » (2007) on Canada’s Chat Blanc Records. A collaborative album with Aidan Baker (Nadja) will be released in 2009 on USA’s Killer Pimp Records and Thisquietarmy is currently working on a few short-film scores and soundtracks. With already such a large body of work in which is revealed a large range of guitar-based sonic styles, from minimal drone to electro-ambient to psychedelic shoegaze/post-rock, Thisquietarmy is a forward contender as a pioneer of the experimental ambient Canadian music scene.

Live performance

Thisquietarmy has been performing live since 2006, especially in Montreal and Quebec City, but also in Ontario and in the USA. The live performances are always presented as a multimedia installation, based on an impromptu score to a prepared film. The usual themes revolve around dark ethereal ambiences and ghostly abstract, prepared by Thisquietarmy himself.

Except for the occasional propulsive beat, no other sound is pre-recorded on stage as everything is done live on the fly. Armed with no less than three loop-samplers, a dozen of pedals, dual-mono signals, as well as dark & ghostly visual projections, Thisquietarmy’s live material can be as structured as it can be improvised on the spot, depending on the moment’s vibe, and drowns the audience in a dream-like hypnotic state of introspection that can sometimes turn into a nightmare.

Since 2006, parallel works in sonic exploration and visual montage have been in constant evolution with each performance. In 2009, Thisquietarmy intends to present brand new works with new images and new live pieces to be performed.

A European tour is scheduled for late spring 2009, with Nadja & Aidan Baker.

Alien8 Recordings has just launched a new series of digital-only releases and chose to open their digital store with the re-release of thisquietarmy's Transmissions, a conceptual soundtrack to Christy Romanick’s Very Large Array book, which features a series of colored photographs shot in San Agustin, New Mexico.

The book/soundtrack, limited to only 75 physical copies, was originally released on Christy’s imprint, Space30a. The digital release features an exclusive 15-minute track and includes the electronic version of the book.

For this conceptual soundtrack to Christy's breathtaking photographs, Thisquietarmy recreates the transmissions received through the various hybrid configurations (BnA, CnB, DnC) of the Very Large Array dishes in New Mexico located at 3774379 258421 13S on the grid-based UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) coordinate system of the Earth's surface. Different sounds from outer space are captured through the different configurations such as the first televised transmission returning from space, signals from lost spacecrafts and random outer space phenomenons.

Thisquietarmy signs to Foreshadow to release its debut album titled 'Unconquered', that will see the light in March 2008. Foreshadow is fairly new and upcoming record label from Krakow, Poland who has released Nadja's Corrasion album.

A free internet MP3 single release called "Battlefield Arkestrah & Dronewars" is already available to stream and download. It features the single "Battlefield Arkestrah" which clocks at more than 8 minutes and its b-side "Dronewars" which clocks at more than 16 minutes for a total of 24 minutes! Exclusively released on Foreshadow.

Thisquietarmy is back from a 4-day mini-weekend tour in the U.S. after droving for 20 hours through 6 states, to performed in 2 cities (New York City & Boston) to a handful of people - and it was worth it!!

A really nice solo experience, played with great bands such as Elika & Arms and Sleepers, met some nice people along the way that cared enough to talk to me about my set, bought CDs, shared their booze.

About the TQA song "As The Creatures Unravel from Within/Vampyr", it was exclusively done for this compilation, with the Halloween theme in mind... and it was inspired by the 1932 public domain movie Vampyr. I've made a list of Thisquietarmy songs I'm hoping to get recorded and mixed by the end of the summer.

Estimating about 80 minutes of music, not including outtakes - - - most of the known released material were born from outtakes and improvisation. But in-between all that, there are real compositions that have occured, but either never recorded, or at least never well enough recorded.

There are also pieces that I've created in the context of my live shows, which I have been prioritizing for the last year - - after a few not so memorable ones, I can now say that I've reached a certain satisfaction playing live, which wasn't the case for the first half of shows I've played.

No plans as to how I'll be releasing it yet. Ideally some cool enough label would be putting out a full-length. I guess I should also start to knock on some doors.
