Aural Diptych Series #3 is released & available now! Check out the details here: TQA015 | ADS03 : MILLIMETRIK / ELIKA - REMIXED - featuring no less than 3 remixes by thisquietarmy, as well as from Auburn Lull, Engineers, Sugrcane, Absent Without Leave & more!
Again, Ms. Elayne Safir provided the wonderful artwork, Ms. Meryem Yildiz provided a couple of surreal sets of diptych photography and TQA(r) put everything together with extra care, home-printed, handcut and handpackaged with love. This time around, we used delicate european Artoz envelopes, and the package design is looking better than ever! As always, these are very limited to 100 copies only.
Also for the first time, we included a free digital download with this release & All the ADS releases are now available on our TQA RECORDS BANDCAMP space for digital download. Tiny detail, we had to rais the price by 2$, because we were barely making up for the costs with the first 2 ADS releases. With such an elaborate and unique package, I'm sure you understand. Thanks for your support.
We'd also like to welcome a brand new online store from AR, PIRATE SHIP RECORDS, who have approached us to carry all of our releases! Their store opens in 10 days... make sure you go check them out!
thisquietarmy & Scott Cortez - Meridians 12" LP is now available!
They are limited to 499 numbered copies and we only have a few for sale --- we'll only ship to Canada & USA as the Canada Post shipping prices are absolutely horrible for a 12" elsewhere (16$ = ridiculous) . Europeans & worldwide customers are better off ordering directly from three:four Records: here.
For Canada & USA, you can get it from us: here.
Add the Aftermath CD if you don't have it for a special price: here.
The new corrected thisquietarmy - Aftermath digipaks from Basses Fréquences have arrived! Any orders starting from now on will be with the correct digipak, exactly as we wanted them to be: check it out & get it here.
If you have already purchased the misprinted one but would like to get the corrected digipak, I can include it in your next order --- just email me.
In other news, the Aural Diptych Series have been featured in Hard Format, a blog about sublime design in audio media packaging. They have also been reviewed by Textura.
We have received thisquietarmy's Aftermath CDs! And Mains de Givre's Esther Marie CDs!
Unfortunately, there is a little misprint on the front cover (see picture). Instead of delaying the release to correct it, we decided to make it available, as is. The pressing plant has agreed to send us the corrected digipaks to replace them, but it could take up to a month. When that happens, the misprinted version will be very limited (collector's item). If you wish to wait for the corrected version, that is your choice, but it's really a minor misprint and the music remains completely unaffected. At worse, you could ask me to include the corrected digipak in your next order.
Read all about Aftermath and Esther Marie in Eric Quach's interviews with Textura & Tokafi.
Also, reviews of Aftermath by Textura & the Montreal Mirror, reviews of Esther Marie by Fluid Radio & Cyclic Defrost.

TQA(R) will be releasing a split series, called Aural Diptych Series (ADS). It follows the same concept as the split record with 2 bands/artists, however each one will have their material on a separate 3" EP CDR, and both will be packaged as one item --- much like a diptych in photography, which uses two different images side by side to form one single artistic statement. Thus: Aural Diptych.
We are once again teaming up with visual artist Meryem Yildiz as she will provide her trademark diptych photography as the artwork to be included in the packages.
The packaging format will follow the custom-made one we did for TQA010, i.e. the thisquietarmy European tour CDR/DVDR w/ photographs. There will also be an option to receive an additional 5" CDR of the split for those who can't use 3" CDs (Mac users & slot CD players).
This said, we are happy to announce the first artists of the ADS series:
TQA013 | ADS01 : Mains de Givre / thisquietarmy
TQA014 | ADS02 : Quilt / Hoefizer
TQA015 | ADS03 : Elika / Millimetrik
ADS 01 & ADS 02 should be ready for March 2010,
ADS 03 is scheduled sometimes for late spring 2010.
More artists TBA for ADS 04 & 05, already in the talks.

Here are
some welcoming info about the new artists on the label:
QUILT is the solo works of Seth Graham, best known for his work with the recently disbanded psych-drone quartet Romance of Young Tigers from Ohio. He has since relocated to Brooklyn, NY and self-released a solo album with 50 different handmade covers. He will be recording some organ drones & vox for us.
http://www.myspace.com/romanceofyoungtigers
HOEFIZER is David Mitchell from Montreal, who also plays in Saccidananda. David is pretty active in the Montreal music scene as a booker and show promoter under the name The Grand Theft Ottoman Empire. His drones were recorded and mixed by Patrick Lacharité of Below The Sea/Apillow.
http://www.myspace.com/hoefizer
MAINS DE GIVRE is a collaboration between Eric Quach (drone) and Montreal violinist Émilie Livernois-Desroches (ex-Profugus Mortis, Bâtard du Nord, Sugarshack, etc.). They've released the "Insomnie à l'Ail" EP, limited to 24 already-sold out copies (TQA012) that were botched quickly put together for their first show last November. It will be re-released as part of a split with thisquietarmy, while we patiently wait for their full-length album, to be released by Textura this spring.
http://www.myspace.com/mainsdegivre
MILLIMETRIK is someone you're already familiar with: Pascal Asselin from Le Chat Blanc Orchestra, also in Oromocto Diamond & Below The Sea. As Millimetrik, Pascal has already released 4 albums & various EPs out on P572, Make Mine & Statik since 2003 and has performed in North America & Europe.

Two new items for sale.
First, a new EP sampler called "Meanwhile". I was hoping that we would've seen a new album out by now, but it looks like it has been delayed. In fact, there are quite a few albums that have been in the works since this summer, and I imagine that they would be released throughout 2010.
So if you are, like myself, impatient... grab this sampler, limited to 50 copies. It contains 4 brand new tracks (33:00), never heard/never released before, and will most likely be out on separate albums, on different labels. The tracks are still untitled, and are a different edit from how they will appear on the proper album.
Check it out: HERE.

Secondly, our friends in Chat Blanc Records & P572 Records from Quebec City have co-released a beautiful 166-pages book-CD, full color, filled with pictures, stories, memorabilia. The shipping is pricey for this item, but it shows how heavy it is! Well-worth it if you're into those two labels and artists.
Check it out: HERE
Canada = 27$ USD PPD
USA = 32$ USD PPD
World = 38$ USD PPD
If you are buying other items with the book, please email @ thisquietarmy / gmail for possible combined shipping quote.

Aidan Baker & Thisquietarmy - A Picture of a Picture CD
Label: Killer Pimp Music
AVAILABLE NOW!!!
The long-awaited follow-up to the Orange EP released on TQA(R).
For their first full-length album, Baker & Quach have decided to do things differently by setting a simple rule beforehand: the record was to be played and recorded live together, adding a very minimal amount of overdubs if not any. The recording session took place in the fall of 2007, in Quach's own home studio TQA-HQ in Montreal. Because of their very busy schedule, it took about a year before the two artists decided to get together to work on these tracks again. This time, Baker finalized the mixes in his home studio, resulting again in four long movements, clocking at around an hour's length. Instead of the overall terror-ambient feel of their first collaboration, the first two tracks actually find both guitarists exploring the brighter side of their spectrum, evoking the hope and the beauty represented in Christy Romanick's photographs that were again used for the artwork, in conjunction with Quach's sketches.
25.12.2008
Shame, shame, shame... Was 2008 really a year without releases for TQA(R)? The answer is FALSE. Yes, that's right.
On October 18th 2008, Thisquietarmy played his first official one-off synth-set as Hi_My_Quiet_Tsar, which took place at Cagibi, in Montreal. To commemorate the event, TQA(R) impulsively released on the same day TQA009a, a 3"CDR limited to 24 numbered copies, with a choice of 4 different covers. The item was of course sold out (at 3$ a piece), and no other copies have been made since.
While we wait for some kind of clarity and in the spirit of the holidays, Thisquietarmy & TQA(R) have decided to offer a free MP3 download of this release, under Thisquietarmy's name. Three ambient synth-jams with a Moog MG-1 & pedals, recorded by Eric Quach in Sept. '08.

Six new dark mood-shifting tracks, a darker, suffocating affair that is expected to give you the chills, just in time for the pull of autumn & halloween!!

New releases now available:
* The Sales Department, Account EP (TQA007) - MD Matheson formed The Sales Department in 2006 after successfully leading Beef Terminal through a decade of analogue samples and guitar based core values. The main idea behind this project is portability. Making music with a computer and found sounds, without real instruments, wherever he may be. TSD could be found at home in Toronto or mixing on a plane during on his travels throughout Thailand & China! The results: Music made by computers operated by a human, reminescent of a comeback of Warp Records' IDM ambient artists such as Autechre, Plaid & Boards of Canada, with the transposed essence of Beef Terminal's soul.
* Apillow, Leaves Winter Alone EP (TQA008) - Apillow is Patrick Lacharité, the guitarist and sound engineer behind Below The Sea. After 3 critically acclaimed full-length albums on Where Are My Records, Patrick Lacharité finally releases a disc of his very own solo work. Apillow tinkers on an old lonely piano, scratches on his effected guitar and mixes it all up with computer-generated percussions to create imaginative and complex build-ups within the minimalism realm. This could be your perfect soundtrack for the current automnal season that you'd wish it never ends. "Leaves Winter Alone" is 4 tracks, also packaged in brown cardboard Arigato Pak, with drawings by Kit Malo, hand-printed by Patrick Lacharité in 5-color silkscreen process - all done with extra care & love.
As usual, both releases are limited to 200 physical copies.
Grab both of them at a special price (12$ shipped anywhere) for a limited time only. Order them together here!

Patrick Lacharité from Below The Sea, aka Apillow.
He is supposed to have something ready for us (TQA008)

* * On the distro front, Destroyalldreamers will be releasing their new long-awaited 2nd full-length album titled "Wish I Was All Flames" on October 23rd 2007, on Where Are My Records. It will be available on This Quiet Army Records on the same date. We might do a pre-order, we'll let you know. Their first album will also be available at the same time.

* TQA Records website now features a small DISTRO section, mostly of CDs and projects that are related to the TQA Records family - available now is Millimetrik (Pascal Asselin from Le Chat Blanc Orchestra) and Ixe-13 (Mathieu Grisé from Le Chat Blanc Orchestra), and of course, the new Thisquietarmy EP on Chat Blanc Records. We also got a few 12" vinyl EP by Destroyalldreamers if anyone is interested, though it is a real pain to ship. Scroll to the right to check out the store!
19.06.2007
* You can now order the new release TQA006 by Electroluminescent, last release of the summer. 3 brand new tracks of wondeful psychedelic ambient running over half an hour, plus 2 remixes of classic Electroluminescent tracks by Elika & Millimetrik. Listen to the sample MP3. Read the release sheet for more info. To Order, go HERE, or HERE for Canadians.
* We are pleased to announce that the next release, TQA007 will be by The Sales Department. The Sales Department is MD Matheson. Yes, this is the same person behind Beef Terminal (Noise Factory). Mr. Matheson has hanged up his guitar indefinitely and has started to make music solely with computers - or as he puts it, "electronic music made by computers operated by humans". The early mixes on his myspace suggests that TSD is heading toward something pretty Boards of Canada-ish (which is very good in our books!) but the final result will only be heard this fall of 2007.
* Another review of TQA003 by Roberto Mandolini on LOSING TODAY (IT)
* Website revamped.
03.06.2007

The collaboration between Scott Cortez and thisquietarmy doesn’t really come as a surprise. The latter acknowledges that the previous works from Cortez (under the lovesliescrushing moniker) greatly influenced his work, to the point of using the same way of writing the band’s name (no capital letter and no spaces between words) for his actual solo project. The main thing that they have in common is their unconventional use of the guitar, which they consider as a signal generator. They then process those sounds through various effects, to obtain a different result than that of the original signal until the source becomes almost undetectable. Meridians is also the first vinyl production from thisquietarmy, as it is Scott Cortez’s first under his real name. NEW EDITION NOW AVAILABLE! |

Aftermath is thisquietarmy's fourth album and first for Basses Fréquences. Partially inspired and in respect to aesthetics by the works of German visual artist Anselm Kiefer, the setting of Aftermath takes place in the post-apocalyptic countryside and revolves around fallen angels as unexploded ordnances. In parallel, the compositions were also inspired by the sounds of crackling tubes and failing resistors captured by amplifiers during the recording process. Drones and melodies were built around these hissing sounds to create moods of tension and transitions from the remnants of destruction. These static interferences thus remained as important compositional elements, as if the whole themed-universe stemmed from a faraway buzz, in which the dawn of a new era reveals itself. With Aftermath, thisquietarmy manages to create the perfect light and heavy post-nuclear winter atmosphere, with a glimmer of hope appearing slowly like sun rays through massive dust clouds. MAINS DE GIVRE is a violin-centered soundscaping project involving self-taught experimentalist Eric Quach and classically trained musician Émilie Livernois-Desroches, both of whom call Montreal home. Quach is widely known for the experimental ambient work he's produced under his thisquietarmy alias and also is the founder of the instrumental-shoegazer band Destroyalldreamers. Livernois-Desroches has played violin since she was seven years old and been teaching since 2003. She has been a part of various chamber music and symphonic orchestras, and performs with a wide variety of bands in styles ranging from pop to medieval to metal. While her previous best-known project was the melodic folk-black metal band Blackguard (formerly known as Profugus Mortis), Mains de Givre is her most experimental project to date. Quach and Livernois-Desroches first crossed paths in 2003 while playing with their respective bands Destroyalldreamers and Sugarshack as part of the emerging post-rock scene in Montreal. Following each other's musical achievements over the years, their mutual respect for each other grew until they found themselves six years later embarking on a studio collaboration initially intended to be part of a thisquietarmy release. As their personal and musical chemistry grew, their newfound closeness turned the collaboration into an official long-term project they christened Mains de Givre (frost hands) after a nickname that had been given to Émilie (émilie-aux-mains-de-givre) by her bandmates. Mains de Givre's debut album, Esther Marie, originates from material recorded at the duo's first jam session in the spring of 2009. The recording opens with the very first notes the two played together, notes that evoke an eerie sadness that permeates the album and characterizes the mood of their collaboration. With the violin as the lead instrument, Quach's guitar playing is restrained yet also tense, as he generates dark, slowly evolving drone atmospheres alongside subtle, looped-based patterns that swirl within the lower end of the sound spectrum. Eric Quach (destroyalldreamers, thisquietarmy) from Montreal QC, Ryan Ferguson (Electroluminescent, Sianspheric) from Hamilton ON, Pascal Asselin (Millimetrik, Le Chat Blanc Orchestra, Below The Sea) from Quebec City QC have often crossed paths during their musical careers with their various projects --- the first time in 2005. Since then, they've become close friends and have played together all over Quebec, Ontario & even in Europe. It was only a matter of time before a collaboration was to happen. And so it did, on July 26th, 2009 - live at Sam Murdock's house in Quebec City where he runs the P572 label and occasionally host house shows. This project, dubbed Parallel Lines, in reference to their numerous musical endeavours, is the result of this musical collaboration between 3 great friends. Split over 5 parts; or "movements", this live collaboration between 3 artists at the forefront of underground experimental music in Canada is quite an epic. Sprawling layers of guitars and synths create a huge wall of psyched out shoegaze over the top of rhythmic and hypnotic drumming. What you'll hear is something you would not hear from any of the artists individually; it's something new and exciting. The term "krautgaze" has been used and it's a pretty accurate description. Limited to 200 hand stamped and hand numbered copies in standard windowed sleeve tied with string, from Dead Pilot Records (UK). http://parallellines.bandcamp.com More details : HERE |

thisquietarmy Thisquietarmy is the ambient/drone project of Eric Quach, from Montreal post-shoegazer band Destroyalldreamers. His guitar-based sonic experimentations challenge the boundaries of the conventional guitar-drone mould by combining both non-frigid song structure and ambiance together, blending layers of textures over textures, merging faint growing melodies in a beautiful sea of noise & tightening loose ends together. "Blackhaunter" is Thisquietarmy's sophomore album, which its themes revolve around inner demons and the darker side of affairs. The cleansing ritual is processed in slow-motion throughout six powerful mood-shifting tracks, while struggling deeply between the realms of ghostly dreams and sexy nightmares. Extra spicy agony, martial metronomic beats & haunting suffocation included. Expect to wake up from this deliverance covered in sweat! Tracklist : 1. Black Haunters

thisquietarmy THISQUIETARMY is a solo project from a young talented Canada-based artist Eric Quach. He is also known for being a guitarist in a renowned shoe-gaze band DESTROYALLDREAMERS. As THISQUIETARMY, he explores never-ending spectrum of guitar ambience and loop drone sounds. From the mellow opening of“Immobilization”, through grandiose “Battlefield Arkestrah” and “The Sun Destroyers”, gloomy “Death of a Sailor”, to closing notes of “Empire”, Eric Quach manages to capture the essence of contemporary alternative guitar experimentation while maintaining disturbing but also captivating aural atmosphere. “Unconquered” presents this musical project as consciously standing among the best artists of this genre, which is symbolized by the guest appearance of Aidan Baker. On the other hand, THISQUIETARMY, already on his debut album,looks far into the future and crosses the boundaries, the best sign of which are the clean female vocals of Meryem Yildiz in one of the tracks – something not common in the field of ambient drone guitar music. Eric’s experience in DESTROYALLDREAMERS, numerous live performances, brave open mind and genuine artistic freedom allowed him to deliver his first official debut full-length album in a flawless and extraordinary way.
