TQA Records is an independant DIY label founded in 2005 by Eric Quach (destroyalldreamers, thisquietarmy) based in Montreal. The label specializes, but is not limited to the likes of ambient, shoegaze, post-rock, instrumental, electronic & experimental music.
CREATION. 2
The label was originally created as an outlet to release thisquietarmy's own music without any specific intent to become bigger than the purpose that it initially served. However, the experience for the first release has proven so efficient and satisfactory in terms of design, packaging & cost that the label thought it could expand its ambitions by using their creative & promotion tools to help like-minded artists. The best way to do this is to provide a great outlet for them to release their music to a growing circle of individuals who appreciates these particular type of sounds that are often overlooked, ignored & unappreciated by the masses.
DESIGN & FORMAT. 3
Each release shall contain exclusive material, and shall run between 20 & 35 minutes (EP format) : we feel that the type of music we release is more efficient in small concentrated doses. It also involves a smaller promotional budget & work load that would be proportionnal to an EP length (unlike a full-length) - which pretty much suits the quantity that this label is prepared to carry on its shoulder for each release.
Each release shall initially be limited to 200 copies. Exceptional cases of repressing may occur - however both parties, artist and label, have to agree. Some release may have a lower pressing number, such as 24, 50 or 100 depending on the case.
The artist may input and contribute largely to the artwork, but the design & packaging is entirely provided by the label. It ensures the best low-cost esthetics for the release's packaging as to provide the artist's music for a modest & very low-profit cost. The promotion & distribution of the artist's releases are done by the label.
This is a labor of love for music. Neither the label nor the artist make any money out of them. However, this opportunity will provide a growing platform for both the artist and the label.
The release's DIY hand-packaging shall try to have particular distinctions from the other labels, such as color CD(r)s, glossy jacket artwork, silkscreen, transparency, seals, vinyl sleeves, paper inserts & miscellaneous goodies, and shall probably evolve with every release as the label also acts as a creative visual design outlet for the music. This is the fun part for the label after all.
DISTRIBUTION & MAIL ORDER. 4
The easiest way to purchase an item from TQA Records is to browse through our online-catalogue and make payments through paypal.
We are always
in the process of finding other local & international distributors. As a result, selected releases can be found through the following distributors/store :

L'Oblique (Montreal, Canada)
Angle Rec (Montreal, Canada)
Archive Recordings (USA)
Aquarius Records (USA)

CONTACT & DEMOS. 5

Also, send us a e-mail to be part of our mailing list.
We do accept demos. Keep in mind that This Quiet Army Records is a low-budget one-man organization and as usual, it might take a while to get to it. However, we tend to favor friends & artists we have met through the music scene.

Aidan Baker
Drone master Aidan Baker is a musician from Toronto. Anyone who hasn't heard of him by now have been sleeping under a rock for the past decade, as he has performed all over Canada, the US & Europe several times. Aidan Baker has also released countless albums (more than 100 by our last estimate) on countless different labels from around the world, either under his own name or with his numerous projects Nadja, Mnemosyne, ARC.& other collaborations.
As a solo artist, Baker explores the deconstructive sonic possibilities of the electric guitar as a primary sound source. Yet, even with his infinte discography, Aidan's guitar sounds have always been refreshing as they instantly mesmerize and penetrates the inner soul.

Apillow
After successfully leading Below The Sea through 3 full-length albums on Where Are My Records, Patrick Lacharité finally releases a disc of his very own solo work.
Apillow tinkers on an old lonely piano, scratches on his effected guitar and mixes it all up with computer-generated percussions to create imaginative and complex build-ups within the minimalism realm. This could be your perfect soundtrack for the upcoming autumnal season that you'd wish it never ends.

Electroluminescent
Ryan Ferguson has been active on the fringes of the Hamilton music scene for years now – picking up occasional shows with the guys from canadian space-rock icons Sianspheric and others. Though these musical experiences have only pushed Ryan to do his own and creating his own brand of psychedelic drone as Electroluminescent.
He actively started to play solo shows some four years later in 2002, always somehow improvising and changing his sets, never playing the same thing twice. Carrying a pile of gear on stage, Electroluminescent's successful one-man band challenge to sample everything on the fly, from guitars to synths to electronic drums made his live shows very dynamic and mostly very impressive. He has since then gathered a lot of interest and support from the scene, opening for the likes of A Silver Mt. Zion & Simply Saucer, touring Europe with Below The Sea.

Elika
Elika is a boy and a girl from Brooklyn who write and record dreamy music with killer beats.
They combine blissed-out and narcotic ambience with head-nodding beats that range from Downtempo to Trance to IDM. Spacey female vocals mix with gauzy, textured guitars, field recordings, and crisp drum programming to create incredibly visual songs with the atmosphere of childhood and layers of detail.
A mix of Shoegaze and Electronica, Elika is equal parts Slowdive and Boards of Canada combined with elements from My Bloody Valentine, Aphex Twin, and Flying Saucer Attack. Their music washes neon-tinted melodies with multilayered, psychedelic percussion.
Elika’s live setup is unusual for most bands. Eva’s processed ethereal vocals, analog keyboards, snare drum and ride cymbal meld with Brian’s treated guitar, keyboards, and laptops. Accompanied by beat matched projections, their live sound is an overwhelming mix of ambience, melody, and ass shaking bass.
This first TQA(r) release combines the best of their early material with brand new recently recorded exclusive tracks. The quality of their songwritiing and production makes them THE band to watch out for in today's shoegaze/dreampop scene.

Le Chat Blanc Orchestra
Pascal Asselin has been all over the map since 1995, notably known as the drummer for the crafty instrumental band Below The Sea, but more importantly as known as his moniker Millimetrik, and has released 3 full-lengths albums on Statik Records & various EPs on smaller independent labels, and has played a few times at MUTEK festival, and all over Europe as well. He is also a DJ, a remix artist, has a few other project (Snowflake, Glider) as well as the man behind the artsy-crafty label Chat Blanc Records.
Mathieu Grisé is known as one of Montreal’s post-shoegaze band Destroyalldreamers’ guitarist. He also releases music under his moniker Ixe-13 (EP & full-length on Chat Blanc Records), and has appeared on Below The Sea’s last LP.
Both musicians have been collaborating for a few years, when Pascal took Mathieu under his wing shortly after they’ve met. As a result, Mathieu has joined Pascal on stage for a several Millimetrik shows in 2005 & 2006, opening for Jérôme Minière and playing at the Under the Snow festival, amongst others. They also did a split album for Worthy Records called Lo-Fi Love, and has both remix songs for each other.
This new project is only a logical evolution from everything they’ve done together so far. Le Chat Blanc Orchestra combines parts of their own project Millimetrik & Ixe-13, as well as their eternal love for Lo-Fi but also for true ambient music.
Borrowing from the mindset of the untouchable contemporary gurus Stars of the Lid as well as the early works of Brian Eno, LCBO has been crafting slow slow-moving minimal pieces of ambient music, starting with drones and ending with deep orchestral melodies, yet without breaking out of the ambient mould.
They successfully accommodate both passive and active listening, either for background music to study to – or for dark self-introspection, without forcing one on another : the listener gets to choose. However, armed with laptops, samplers & guitar, the duo proved that they are able to sustain the interest of a public audience when they played their first show, supporting Michigan space-rock pioneers Auburn Lull in March 2007.

The Sales Department
MD Matheson formed The Sales Department in 2006 after successfully leading Beef Terminal through a decade of analogue samples and guitar based core values. He has released 4 full-length albums as Beef Terminal on Noise Factory Records and a few compilations before calling it quits.
The main idea behind the TSD project is portability: making music with a computer and found sounds, without real instruments, wherever he may be. TSD could be found at home in Toronto or mixing on a plane during on his travels throughout Thailand & China. The results: Music made by computers operated by a human, reminescent of a comeback of Warp Records' IDM ambient artists such as Autechre, Plaid & Boards of Canada, with the transposed essence of Beef Terminal's soul.

Thisquietarmy
...is the musical solo project of Eric Quach from destroyalldreamers.
His journey throughout thisquietarmy consists of exploring the guitar as the sole tone generator and more importantly the different combinations of the effects boxes that has acquired since the beginning, making full use the capacity of a real-time looper to create soundscapes & textures, discovering sounds & melodies in a blank canvas context while trying to create instrumental ambient music that is as interesting and diversified as possible.
Ideas are often generated by the re-interpretation of its own improvisations. textures are sometimes captured on the moment and details are sometimes added afterwards. Multi-tracking, layering, decompositions & reconstructions are uncommon in the process either. Making instrumental ambient with only one instrument in real-time can be a live challenge. on records, the music is best to be listened with headphones.

Shane Whitbread
Also known as 'Fiveways', which was cut down from 'fivewaysfromsunday' when he found out about the christian rock band of the same name. He now releases his work under his real name & uses 'Fiveways-sound' as his recording studio's name.
He is a legend on the guitar geek forum, a source for live guitar-related unfortunate events myths + tales & an opinionated human pedal effects encyclopedia.
With synths & vocoder aside, Shane Whitbread has been on a lifelong mad scientist-like mission to create the perfect guitar rig that will deliver the capacity to be able to play the way he has always intended to play, and to create the ambitious music he has always intended to make. Unfortunately he has been struggling every day with the frustration & limitations of his own guitar gear, which has resulted in a roller-coaster of emotions toward music making & piles of unsatisfying tapes + lost ideas.
Luckily, he has been able to find within himself & in-between this whole mess, some wonderful pieces of music that are deemed worthy to be released. Just don't expect him to play another live show before he completes his rig.

TQA(R) will be releasing a split series, called Aural Diptych Series (ADS). It follows the same concept as the split record with 2 bands/artists, however each one will have their material on a separate 3" EP CDR, and both will be packaged as one item --- much like a diptych in photography, which uses two different images side by side to form one single artistic statement. Thus: Aural Diptych.
We are once again teaming up with visual artist Meryem Yildiz as she will provide her trademark diptych photography as the artwork to be included in the packages.
The packaging format will follow the custom-made one we did for TQA010, i.e. the thisquietarmy European tour CDR/DVDR w/ photographs. There will also be an option to receive an additional 5" CDR of the split for those who can't use 3" CDs (Mac users & slot CD players).
This said, we are happy to announce the first artists of the ADS series:
Mains de Givre / thisquietarmy | ADS 01 / TQA013
Quilt / Hoefizer | ADS 02 / TQA014
Elika / Millimetrik | ADS 03 / TQA015
ADS 01 & ADS 02 should be ready for March 2010,
ADS 03 is scheduled sometimes for late spring 2010.
More artists TBA for ADS 04 & 05, already in the talks.

Here are
some welcoming info about the new artists on the label:
QUILT is the solo works of Seth Graham, best known for his work with the recently disbanded psych-drone quartet Romance of Young Tigers from Ohio. He has since relocated to Brooklyn, NY and self-released a solo album with 50 different handmade covers. He will be recording some organ drones & vox for us.
http://www.myspace.com/romanceofyoungtigers
HOEFIZER is David Mitchell from Montreal, who also plays in Saccidananda. David is pretty active in the Montreal music scene as a booker and show promoter under the name The Grand Theft Ottoman Empire. His drones were recorded and mixed by Patrick Lacharité of Below The Sea/Apillow.
http://www.myspace.com/hoefizer
MAINS DE GIVRE is a collaboration between Eric Quach (drone) and Montreal violinist Émilie Livernois-Desroches (ex-Profugus Mortis, Bâtard du Nord, Sugarshack, etc.). They've released the "Insomnie à l'Ail" EP, limited to 24 already-sold out copies (TQA012) that were botched quickly put together for their first show last November. It will be re-released as part of a split with thisquietarmy, while we patiently wait for their full-length album, to be released by Textura this spring.
http://www.myspace.com/mainsdegivre
MILLIMETRIK is someone you're already familiar with: Pascal Asselin from Le Chat Blanc Orchestra, also in Oromocto Diamond & Below The Sea. As Millimetrik, Pascal has already released 4 albums & various EPs out on P572, Make Mine & Statik since 2003 and has performed in North America & Europe.

Two new items for sale.
First, a new EP sampler called "Meanwhile". I was hoping that we would've seen a new album out by now, but it looks like it has been delayed. In fact, there are quite a few albums that have been in the works since this summer, and I imagine that they would be released throughout 2010.
So if you are, like myself, impatient... grab this sampler, limited to 50 copies. It contains 4 brand new tracks (33:00), never heard/never released before, and will most likely be out on separate albums, on different labels. The tracks are still untitled, and are a different edit from how they will appear on the proper album.
Check it out: HERE.

Secondly, our friends in Chat Blanc Records & P572 Records from Quebec City have co-released a beautiful 166-pages book-CD, full color, filled with pictures, stories, memorabilia. Best of all, it features an amazing compilation that includes an exclusive thisquietarmy track called "Aluminum Twin Snakes", as well as tracks from Port-Royal, Electroluminescent, Epic45, Building Castles out of Matchsticks, Le Chat Blanc Orchestra, Darren Haymen, Swedish Death Polka, Millimetrik remixing Auburn Lull and a whole lot more!!! The shipping is pricey for this item, but it shows how heavy it is! Well-worth it if you're into those two labels and artists.

USA = 32$ USD PPD
World = 38$ USD PPD

Aidan Baker & Thisquietarmy - A Picture of a Picture CD
Label: Killer Pimp Music
AVAILABLE NOW!!!
The long-awaited follow-up to the Orange EP released on TQA(R).
For their first full-length album, Baker & Quach have decided to do things differently by setting a simple rule beforehand: the record was to be played and recorded live together, adding a very minimal amount of overdubs if not any. The recording session took place in the fall of 2007, in Quach's own home studio TQA-HQ in Montreal. Because of their very busy schedule, it took about a year before the two artists decided to get together to work on these tracks again. This time, Baker finalized the mixes in his home studio, resulting again in four long movements, clocking at around an hour's length. Instead of the overall terror-ambient feel of their first collaboration, the first two tracks actually find both guitarists exploring the brighter side of their spectrum, evoking the hope and the beauty represented in Christy Romanick's photographs that were again used for the artwork, in conjunction with Quach's sketches.
25.12.2008
Shame, shame, shame... Was 2008 really a year without releases for TQA(R)? The answer is FALSE. Yes, that's right.
On October 18th 2008, Thisquietarmy played his first official one-off synth-set as Hi_My_Quiet_Tsar, which took place at Cagibi, in Montreal. To commemorate the event, TQA(R) impulsively released on the same day TQA009a, a 3"CDR limited to 24 numbered copies, with a choice of 4 different covers. The item was of course sold out (at 3$ a piece), and no other copies have been made since.
While we wait for some kind of clarity and in the spirit of the holidays, Thisquietarmy & TQA(R) have decided to offer a free MP3 download of this release, under Thisquietarmy's name. Three ambient synth-jams with a Moog MG-1 & pedals, recorded by Eric Quach in Sept. '08.

* TQA Records website now features a small DISTRO section, mostly of CDs and projects that are related to the TQA Records family - available now is Millimetrik (Pascal Asselin from Le Chat Blanc Orchestra) and Ixe-13 (Mathieu Grisé from Le Chat Blanc Orchestra), and of course, the new Thisquietarmy EP on Chat Blanc Records. We also got a few 12" vinyl EP by Destroyalldreamers if anyone is interested, though it is a real pain to ship. Scroll to the right to check out the store!

* You can now order the new release TQA006 by Electroluminescent, last release of the summer. 3 brand new tracks of wondeful psychedelic ambient running over half an hour, plus 2 remixes of classic Electroluminescent tracks by Elika & Millimetrik. Listen to the sample MP3. Read the release sheet for more info. To Order, go HERE, or HERE for Canadians.
* We are pleased to announce that the next release, TQA007 will be by The Sales Department. The Sales Department is MD Matheson. Yes, this is the same person behind Beef Terminal (Noise Factory). Mr. Matheson has hanged up his guitar indefinitely and has started to make music solely with computers - or as he puts it, "electronic music made by computers operated by humans". The early mixes on his myspace suggests that TSD is heading toward something pretty Boards of Canada-ish (which is very good in our books!) but the final result will only be heard this fall of 2007.
